Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope everyone has a day filled with love. I am in Las Vegas with my Mom but going home to my Valentine tomorrow morning and can’t wait. Speaking of Mack, I receive so many questions about who takes my blog photos. The secret’s out- it’s my sweet and selfless hubby!

Let me preface this post by saying I started this entire blog by taking photos on an iPad- yes, you read that right. First with my Dad and then with Mack when we moved. Let’s just say we’ve come a LONG way since then. But as two self-taught, amateur photographers- I have to say I am pretty proud of us! With that in mind, I wanted to share our tips to capturing blog-worthy imagery:

  1. Scout Locations- In most cases, the location makes the photos. We try to keep it fairly consistent but we switch from a number of local spots ranging from neighborhoods to community hubs and hotel exteriors. However, we always shoot outdoors. Natural light is the best light! We are blessed to live in a tourist centralized location which makes finding beautiful locations extremely easy. However, some locations are found in unlikely places. While out driving or riding our bikes, we simply keep our eye out for good backdrops and make a mental note. We determine the shoot day location by proximity and outfit. Some spots are close to our house, some by our church and others are a 30 minute drive away. It just depends if we’re pressed for time or want to make a day of shooting. Key indicators of an ideal location include; colored walls, pillars or homes that feature greenery and anything with white- white columns, white steps, etc.
  2. Shoot at Optimal Time- The best days to shoot are often a gamble. We’ve found that the optimal time to shoot is when it’s really overcast- on the cusp of a  rain storm. We run the risk of getting rained out but every time we shoot in the clouds I say, “I wish I had 5 more outfits we could complete today!” If it’s a very sunny day, opt to shoot in the shade as it will minimize shadows. We always try to avoid noon which makes finding shade a challenge as the sun is at its highest point.
  3. Utilize Editing Tools- I mentioned before that Mack and I are a team- he shoots the images and then I edit them. He took time to learn all the camera settings and I took time to learn how to operate the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of products. Although the photos don’t need a ton of editing if we shoot them in proper lighting- the editing tools offer that finished look. We both invested a lot of time in learning how to operate these tools but are thankful we did. Blog shoots are typically really fun and efficient (unless I am hungry- we try to avoid shooting under those circumstances haha).

Needless to say, I am SO thankful for Mack’s support of this platform and my goals- no matter how big or small. I know I’ve found the rarest gem in my husband and I don’t know how I got so lucky. I hope these tips that we’ve lived and learned along the way will help you achieve the photos you’re trying to capture. Whether for a blog or just for life moments in general! I know we will use these acquired skills for a lifetime!
