With Father’s Day just around the corner (this Sunday!) I wanted to let you all in on some things I’ve learned from my Dad! He’s a man of simple taste which mostly consists of a love of family and of course, sports. Whenever I tell people that I went to Ole Miss, the first question I always get is, “how did you end up there from Denver?” My response to this a drawn out explanation about my Dad’s affinity for the SEC, college traditions of Saturdays down South and football which lead me apply to nearly every SEC school before deciding that Ole Miss was the place for me. I’ve said this before, but our parents really DO know what’s best for us. He’s the reason I went to Ole Miss, why I am able to withstand Saturday after Saturday of College Gameday and why going to baseball games is one of my favorite things to do. Here’s a few other things I’ve learned from him over the years:

  • Always do the right thing (even when no one is watching)- My dad has committed the majority of his life to service through law enforcement, which he still does to this day. With this fact in mind, I was constantly reminded to do the right thing, always! And the most important time to do the right thing is when no one else is watching. This reminder is never far from my mind and I am thankful for that.
  • Mind my own business- My dad literally never says a bad word about anybody. If you try to vent to him, he’ll listen for sure… but he won’t chime in or agree if I am complaining about someone. He always reminds me to, “mind your own business.” Which is really hard for me at times! Especially with a large family that loves to talk weekly, we’re basically in everyone’s business all the time haha.
  • A simple life is the best life- There is a show that my Dad loves to watch, The Honeymooners. Each Christmas Eve we watch the same black and white episode and I love it. Even better though, the main character is a New York City bus driver and he and his wife live in a tiny apartment in the city. He always refers to the characters in the show as living a, “simple life.” And in a world full of the constant need for more and Kardashians, it’s always refreshing to be reminded that we really don’t need anything other than our family, a roof over our heads and a job (even if it’s a simple one).

My oldest memories (with photographs to prove it) consist of me dressed almost identically to my brother at various Major League baseball stadiums around the country. It’s hilarious to look back at the photos now, but back then, I loved going to those game and bringing my mini baseball glove with me (you know, to catch a foul ball). I think Mack appreciates the fact that I grew up around sports because when a game is on, it’s like I am right back at home. And I love that feeling.

Happy early Father’s Day! Thanks so much for reading today!
